What is Low Carbon Steel Wire Mesh?

Low carbon steel mesh is a variety of carbon steel wire woven by warp and weft. The raw material is generally Q295, but high strength carbon steel wire and copper plated steel are also available.

Overview of Low Carbon Steel Wire Mesh

Mild steel wire mesh is the most common common common steel alloy used in the manufacture of industrial wire cloth screens due to its tensile strength and high impact resistance. Composed mainly of iron, low carbon grades 1005, 1006 and 1008 are the most commonly used and contain small amounts of carbon (0.0-0.1%), manganese (0.0-0.5% - which adds to its strength), phosphorus (0.0-0.04%) and sulphur (0.0-0.05%). Low wear resistance and low corrosion resistance may limit the use in some applications, but a variety of special protective coatings can be applied to improve resistance. Galvanising (before or after) is the most economical way to prevent corrosion. Alternatively, protective tin coatings are often used on mud grade screens (tin plating plants). Alternatively, wire cloth can be protected with epoxy coatings, PVC/vinyl coatings, and our powder coating electrostatic applications.

Some of the properties of mild steel wire cloth that determine its widespread use are:

Low carbon steel alloy.

Relatively low cost and high strength material.

Magnetic in all conditions.

Not resistant to corrosion; rusts in most atmospheric environments.

Protective coatings can be applied to increase resistance.

Can be cut, formed and welded.

Mild steel materials for carbon steel mesh applications.

Mild steel (C1008) is often used in the manufacture of industrial wire cloth (screen) screens due to its tensile strength and impact resistance. Although several types of special coatings, such as galvanising (before or after weaving), can be applied to improve its suitability for a given application, low resistance to abrasion, chemical attack and corrosion may limit its use.

High carbon steel for the manufacture of carbon steel mesh.

High-carbon hard-drawing steels are used when resistance to wear and impact is required. This material is commonly used in agricultural, coal, gravel, mining, sand and gravel separation, classification and sorting applications.

Oil tempered steel wire for carbon steel mesh fabrication.

Oil tempered steel wire is a high carbon steel wire that has been specially tempered to provide greater strength and wear resistance, although its impact resistance is slightly lower than that of ordinary high carbon steel.
