The uses of low carbon steel

Steel is the most commonly used metal in the world. But steel is not just one product. Depending on the composition of the elements, there are various types of alloyed steel. There are high-carbon steels, medium-carbon steels, stainless steels and low-carbon steels, particularly mild steels.

This is a low carbon steel with a carbon content of around 0.3%, ensuring that it is neither too brittle nor too ductile. Somewhere in the middle, this is a good balance and explains why you will find it can be used almost anywhere.

The metal is versatile and inexpensive, and because of the simplicity of the manufacturing process it has become one of the most popular metals for a variety of everyday tasks and uses, from agriculture to the heavy machinery industry.

Low carbon has a variety of applications and can be found in everyday life around the world.

To share with you as a Low Carbon Steel Mesh supplier, here are some examples of the use of low alloy steel.

Mechanical parts

Steel in its most basic form is a combination of two elements; carbon and iron. Depending on the ratio of the two, different levels of strength, ductility and hardness can be achieved. This ductile material is well suited to the manufacture of mechanical parts and is ideally suited to the steel plates used in body panels. Due to its low carbon content, steel can be pressed, moulded, formed and machined without fracture.

Steel construction

Selected for its unique structural properties, mild steel is strong enough to be used for building frames in construction projects. It meets seismic and wind resistance requirements, will not be damaged by insects, and will not rot or catch fire.

Cookware

Most everyday cooking utensils, especially knives, are made of stainless steel. However, there is a market for carbon steel cookware. Mild steel in particular has the advantage of not rusting and it holds an edge and stays sharper for longer. It also has a higher temperature limit and has been treated to be essentially a non-stick material. This style of cookware does require more TLC, but for the more savvy cook it can offer a higher level of performance.

Metal Gates / Fencing

With the help of machining and welding, this alloy steel can achieve an aesthetically pleasing metal gate or fence. It is the ideal material for such applications as it is both strong and resistant to breakage. It can even be painted to provide a longer lasting and low maintenance finish. With a galvanised finish, the additional zinc coating will protect and prevent corrosion.

Whether by hand or machine, it can be easily forged into a variety of shapes to suit even the most intrinsic designs.
